Director of Development, School of Humanities & Sciences

THE OPPORTUNITY

The school’s external relations team builds awareness and raises support for this exciting research and teaching.  H&S seeks a seasoned manager and major gifts fundraiser to serve as Director of Development.  As the chief operating officer for the school’s external relations team, the Director of Development is responsible for a staff of eight in three functional units: fundraising, events and stewardship.  In addition to managing staff, budget and operations for the team, the director will play a critical role in fundraising for the school.  The successful candidate will have strong project management, collaboration and negotiation skills in order to achieve ambitious fundraising goals within a complex internal and external environment.  The director reports to the associate dean for external relations.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Staff management

Recruit, train, motivate, manage and retain a talented staff of eight.  Set ambitious goals, allocate staff resources, and manage progress toward goals; anticipate and resolve problems that might impede progress toward those goals.  With the Director of Communications, serve as one of two senior managers on the external relations team, including supervision of the entire team when the associate dean is out of the office.

Operations

Manage team budgets, expenses, reporting and all other operational functions.  This includes managing and reporting regularly to the dean’s office on solicitations, progress in The Stanford Challenge campaign, and allocation of matching funds.  Responsible for all Office of Development (OOD) internal processes such as the Prospect Clearing Process (PCP) and Volunteer Enlistment Process (VEP).  Serve as liaison to internal units within OOD and H&S for issues related to finance, IT, gift processing, campaign operations, etc.

Fundraising

Manage all fundraising activity by three associate directors of development, including prospecting and developing strategies for major gift cultivation and solicitation.  Serve as lead fundraiser on several of the school’s development priorities.  In collaboration with H&S and other OOD staff, identify, cultivate and solicit prospects for these priorities.  Enlist faculty as appropriate and manage their participation in development activities.  Assist the associate dean in managing the dean of the school’s development activities.

Pipeline

Collaborate with central OOD field staff to identify prospects; manage the H&S pipeline, which should include individual, corporate and foundation prospects.  Build and manage robust prospect portfolios and pipelines for the three associate directors of development in H&S.  In collaboration with the associate dean, manage the dean of the school’s relationships with numerous major prospects and donors.

Development priorities

Collaborate with the associate dean to ensure a clear set of fundraising priorities for the school; create compelling gift opportunities.  Ensure that the H&S communications team produces materials to support fundraising priorities.  Work with the external relations team to communicate H&S priorities to OOD colleagues.  Respond to requests for information about fundraising priorities from OOD colleagues.

Stewardship

Manage H&S stewardship staff; oversee partnership with OOD central stewardship.  Ensure that stewardship team achieves primary goals of reporting on 100% of funds, providing meaningful and innovative stewardship for top donors, and achieving new efficiencies for high-volume stewardship products such as acknowledgement letters.  Bring stewardship into closer alignment with fundraising.  Advise and consult with the dean’s office on use of restricted funds such as graduate fellowships and endowed chairs.

Events

Manage event specialist to ensure the design and execution of a strategic calendar of events that link H&S to The Stanford Challenge.  This includes regional events, campus events, dinners at the dean’s home, etc.  Ensure that events identify new prospects to build the H&S pipeline and that events are focused on H&S fundraising priorities.  Maximize H&S role in university wide events, including participation by the dean of the school.

QUALIFICATIONS

-          Success managing a high performing team and reaching ambitious goals.  Ability to motivate others including direct reports, peers and volunteers.

-          7+ years of development experience; preferably in higher education.  Success raising seven figure gifts.

-          Ability to work with faculty and make a compelling case for supporting the priorities of the School of Humanities & Sciences.  Ability to understand and translate academic work to appeal to external audiences.

-          Well-developed leadership abilities including resourcefulness and a willingness to take risks to solve problems.  Excellent judgment and sensitivity to interpersonal and organizational dynamics.

-          Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate and achieve results with diverse constituencies with potentially competing interests, opinions and expectations.

-           Excellent oral and written communication skills.

-          Enthusiasm, a sense of humor, flexibility and the ability to be productive despite ambiguity are critical to success.

-          Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred.

-          Ability to travel (10% of time) required.
